The Illustration Department’s Character Design Workshop

The Illustration Department’s Character Design Workshop

Character design is perhaps the single biggest reason why an artist is either contacted by a client or passed over.

In The Illustration Department’s Character Design Workshop, 8 attendees will meet once a week with #IllusDept Founder, Giuseppe Castellano, over the course of three weeks.

In Week 1, we will review 3 portfolio pieces from the attendees. Giuseppe will speak to each attendee’s strengths and areas of improvement. Using examples from illustration history, Giuseppe will speak to the tenets of good character design.

An assignment will be provided.

In Week 2, we will review the attendees’ sketches for the assignment. Through live demonstrations, Giuseppe will discuss do’s and don’ts in character design, composition, and more.

After week 2, attendees will proceed to final art.

In Week 3, a guest critic will join our discussion. We’re thrilled to announce that Kelly Light will be our guest critic! We can’t wait to hear what she says about character design!

All classes are 90-minutes long.

All discussions will occur through Google Hangouts—a simple web chat platform. If you have any questions, please email Sarah at
