The Illustration Department’s Summer Session

In The Illustration Department’s Summer Session, 8 attendees will meet once a week with Executive Art Director, Giuseppe Castellano, over the course of five weeks.

In Week 1, we will review 3 portfolio pieces from the attendees. Giuseppe will speak to each attendee’s strengths and areas of improvement.

An assignment will be provided.

In Week 2, we will review the attendees’ sketches for the assignment. Through live demonstrations, Giuseppe will discuss do’s and don’ts in character design, composition, and more.

After week 2, attendees will proceed to final art.

In Week 3, Giuseppe will give a presentation on color. Using examples from the masters, Giuseppe will explain why color is the most underused tool in Illustration.

Attendees will continue to work on their final pieces. All pieces will be due before Week 4.

In Week 4, we will review the attendees’ final pieces for the assignment. Among other topics, Giuseppe will touch on websites, portfolios, and marketing for illustrators.

Attendees will be encouraged to revise their pieces before Week 5.

In Week 5, a guest critic will join our discussion and review revised final pieces. The guest critic will be a children’s book art director, editor, or agent. Among other topics, the guest critic will tell us what they look for in illustration.

Classes on Week 1 and Week 5 will be 90-minutes long. Classes on Weeks 2-4 will be 60 minutes long.

All discussions will occur through Google Hangouts—a simple web chat platform. If you have any questions, please email Sarah at

The Summer Session classes will take place on June 1, June 8, June 15, June 22, and June 29.

Each class begins at 9:00 PM EST.
